Fertilising your lawn is an important part of keeping it healthy. Failing to do so not only affects the surface but everything that’s happening underneath too. You are depriving your lawn of essential nutrients that it needs to flourish in the warmer months.

When to Apply Fertiliser

There is no specific time of year that is best to apply fertiliser. In fact, you should be applying fertiliser throughout the year to prolong growth.

Fertilising your lawn in summer supplies it with additional nutrients to balance out the nutritional requirements. Applying fertiliser in autumn prepares your lawn for the winter months. This encourages prolonged growth and helps to provide thick coverage on the lawn.

It isn’t essential to fertilise in winter, but springtime is a definite. The fertiliser breaks down all the soil build up from winter. This time of year is also perfect to aerate your lawn and apply fertiliser immediately afterwards. Your lawn will absorb all the oxygen and nutrients that it needs to flourish in the summer months.

How to Apply Fertiliser

It is important to always read the instructions on the label before applying fertiliser. To get the best coverage on your lawn, a spreader is an ideal solution. Hand fertilising can lead to burns on the lawn due to oversupply while a spreader will evenly distribute the fertiliser over the lawn, allowing it to absorb into the grass.

When applying the fertiliser, remember to alternate directions. For example, if you first go over your lawn in a north-south direction, the second spread should go east-west. This provides a much wider coverage for your lawn.

Once finished, water the lawn thoroughly, to help remove any excess fertiliser burning the lawn. The water will help the fertiliser seep into the soil. It is best that you keep off your lawn for at least 24-48 hours. This will ensure the fertiliser penetrates the soil without being damaged.
